چکیده

Text understanding in a spatial domain is often seen as the construction of a mental model. In this paper we present the rst prototype of a program that realizes some of the characteristics claimed for spatial reasoning processes in mental models. Our work is based on homogeneous coordinate systems and transformation matrices. This means that a relation between two objects A and B is represented by the transformation matrix that maps the coordinate system of A onto that of B, and by constraints on the parameters of the matrix. We argue that this approach is more exible and more suitable for modelling spatial relations than qualitative approaches. While the psychological questions concerning mental models are largely skipped over, the advantages and problems of our program are discussed in more detail.

The Effect of Self-Regulation on Improving EFL Readers’ Ability to Make Within-Text Inferences

Self-regulation is the ability to regulate one’s cognition, behavior, actions, and motivation strategically and autonomously in order to achieve self-set goals including the learning of academic skills and knowledge. Accordingly, self-regulated learning involves self-generated and systematic thoughts and behaviors with the aim of attaining learning goals. With that in mind, this study aimed to ...

Reference Frames for Spatial Inference in Text Understanding

We present an approach to spatial reasoning that is based on homogenous coordinate systems and their transformations. In contrast to qualitative approaches, spatial relations are not represented by symbolic expressions only but additionally by parameters with constraints, which are subsets of real numbers. Our work is based on the notion of mental models in text understanding introduced in cogn...

SPOT PATTERNS IN GRAY SCOTT MODEL WITH APPLICATION TO EPIDEMIC CONTROL

In this work, we analyse a pair of two-dimensional coupled reaction-diusion equations known as the Gray-Scott model, in which spot patterns have been observed. We focus on stationary patterns, and begin by deriving the asymptotic scaling of the parameters and variables necessary for the analysis of these patterns. A complete bifurcation study of these solutions is presented. The main mathematic...
